Yangtze Three Gorges

The Three Gorges of the Yangtze River are located on the main stream of the Yangtze River in Chongqing Municipality and Hubei Province, stretching from Baidicheng (White Emperor City) in Fengjie County, Chongqing to Nanjinguan in Yichang City, Hubei, with a total length of 193 kilometers. Comprising Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, and Xiling Gorge, the Three Gorges feature towering peaks, steep cliffs, and magnificent scenery. The formation of the gorges is attributed to the continuous uplift of the earth's crust and the powerful erosion of the Yangtze River, resulting in steep cliffs and mountains rising 1000-1500 meters above the river surface.

-Qutang Gorge: The Thunderous Gateway

Qutang Gorge is the shortest section of the Three Gorges, spanning 8 kilometers in Fengjie County, Chongqing, from Baidicheng to Daxi Township. The gorge is characterized by towering peaks on both sides, a narrow entrance, and rapid currents, earning it the reputation of "the mightiest of all under heaven." Key attractions in Qutang Gorge include Fengjie Ancient City, Bazhen Picture, Yufu Pagoda, ancient plank roads, Fengxiang Gorge, Pink Wall, Mengliang Stairs, and Xiniu Wangyue.The name "Qutang Gorge" is derived from the ancient poet Qu Tang, who composed many beautiful poems here. It is also where Liu Bei entrusted his son Liu Shan to Zhuge Liang during the Three Kingdoms period before passing away. Historical sites within Baidicheng include the Orphanage Hall, Zhuge Liang Shrine, and Liu Bei Temple.

-Wu Gorge: Misty Realm of the Goddess

Wu Gorge is the longest section of the Three Gorges, stretching 46 kilometers between Wushan County in Chongqing and Badong County in Hubei, from Daning River to Guandu. Known for its picturesque peaks and misty surroundings, Wu Gorge is often referred to as "the most beautiful gorge." Key attractions in Wu Gorge include the Twelve Peaks of Goddess, Xiaosanxia, Xiaoxiaosanxia, and Dachang Ancient Town.

The name "Wu Gorge" originates from Wushan, believed to be the dwelling place of goddesses who guided boatmen through the mist. The Twelve Peaks of Goddess is a prominent landmark, with the Goddess Peak standing approximately 1000 meters high and resembling a fairy, earning it the title of "the first peak of Wu Gorge." Xiaosanxia (Lesser Three Gorges) and Xiaoxiaosanxia (Lesser Lesser Three Gorges) are tributaries of Wu Gorge, known for their deeper valleys and swifter currents, often referred to as "gorges within the gorge."

-Xiling Gorge: Whispers of Warriors and Poetry

Xiling Gorge is the widest section of the Three Gorges, spanning 76 kilometers in Zigui County, Yichang City, Hubei, from Xiangxi Mouth to Nanjinguan. Characterized by unique peaks and gentle water flow, Xiling Gorge is dubbed "the wonder of Xiling." Key attractions in Xiling Gorge include Bingshu Baojian Gorge, Niugan Mafu Gorge, Huangniu Gorge, and Dengying Gorge.

The name "Xiling Gorge" stems from the tomb of King You of the Western Zhou Dynasty. Within Xiling Gorge are four smaller gorges: Bingshu Baojian Gorge, Niugan Mafu Gorge, Huangniu Gorge, and Dengying Gorge, named after their shapes or legends.

Bingshu Baojian Gorge serves as the entrance to Xiling Gorge, featuring two peaks resembling a military book and a precious sword, believed to be relics of Zhuge Liang. Niugan Mafu Gorge in the middle section of Xiling Gorge features two peaks resembling a cow's liver and a horse's lung, linked to the medicinal herbs of Shennong. Huangniu Gorge in the lower section of Xiling Gorge features a peak resembling a yellow ox, associated with the mount used by Dayu for flood control. Dengying Gorge marks the exit of Xiling Gorge, with a peak resembling a lamp, believed to have inspired the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Three Gorges is during the spring and autumn seasons (March to May, September to November) when the weather is pleasant, and rainfall is minimal, offering the most delightful scenery. Summer (June to August) is characterized by higher temperatures and increased tourist activity. Winter (December to February) is colder but less crowded, ideal for travelers seeking a quieter experience.

The most common way to explore the Three Gorges is by taking a cruise downstream from Chongqing or upstream from Yichang, enjoying the magnificent landscapes along the way. Travelers can also opt to fly or take a train to Yichang or Chongqing and then transfer to local transportation to visit various attractions. Due to the variable climate in the Three Gorges region, it is recommended for travelers to wear comfortable and lightweight footwear and bring sunscreen.
