Chongqing People's Auditorium

An iconic landmark in Chongqing, the Chongqing People's Auditorium, also known as the Great Hall of the People, is recognized as one of the top 10 classical Asian architectural achievements of the 20th century and a quintessential Chinese building of that era. Its grandeur and historical significance make it a must-see attraction that truly comes to life when experienced in person. Construction of this magnificent hall commenced in 1951 and was successfully completed in 1954, boasting an exterior design reminiscent of Beijing's Temple of Heaven. Situated at People's Square in Yuzhong District, the auditorium serves as the venue for the Municipal Legislative Bodies, the Chongqing Municipal People's Congress, and the annual Chongqing Two Sessions.

The Great Hall of the People was honored with a commemorative stamp in 1998, celebrating the first anniversary of Chongqing's transition to an independent municipality in 1997, having previously been part of Sichuan Province. Designed by Zhang Jiade, the building's architectural style draws inspiration from the Ming and Qing dynasties, showcasing central axis symmetry and colonnade-type facades. Standing at approximately 65 meters tall, its central dome is the highest point of the structure, embodying traditional Chinese wooden construction and architectural principles. The addition of the East Wing in 1986 expanded the original design, transforming the once-named Sino-Soviet building into the renowned Great Hall of the People.

Renowned architect Mr. Liang Sicheng hailed the Chongqing People's Auditorium as "the most classic building of epoch-making Chinese classical architecture in the 1950s," solidifying its status as a cherished symbol of Chongqing's cultural heritage. Beyond its architectural significance, the auditorium serves as a vital hub for cultural exchange with foreign nations and has hosted numerous large-scale events, performances, and international conferences, including Chongqing's congress of party representatives, people's congress, and the people's political consultative conference. Situated in Yuzhong District, this majestic hall stands as a testament to China's rich architectural legacy and continues to captivate visitors with its timeless beauty and historical importance.
