Hongya Cave, also known as Hongyadong, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Chongqing, having evolved from a humble abode for the city's working class into a bustling tourist hotspot over the past two decades. This transformation has preserved the essence of Chongqing's industrious people within a dazzling new facade. Visitors are treated to the charm of traditional Chongqing-style architecture, with its distinctive multi-level structures, as they explore the myriad shops, dining options, and entertainment venues within Hongyadong. The breathtaking panoramic views of the cityscape and the illuminated splendor of Hongyadong itself, adorned with a myriad of lights, further enhance the visitor experience.
In the wake of Chongqing's emergence as a vibrant metropolis, fueled by the rapid growth of the Internet, the city has garnered widespread acclaim as a must-visit destination. Renowned for its unique stereoscopic landscapes, a feature rarely found in other urban centers, Chongqing boasts attractions like Hongyadong that showcase three-dimensional vistas within an urban setting.
Formerly known as Hongya Gate, an ancient city gate of Chongqing, Hongyadong is situated at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River, at Cangbai Road. This iconic locale, often referred to as "a stilted building on the cliff and the old Chongqing in memories," serves as a living embodiment of Bayu culture, captivating visitors with its historical significance and architectural charm.
At the heart of Hongyadong's allure are its stilted and imitation antique buildings, spanning an impressive 46,000 square meters. Functioning as an elevated "pedestrian street in the air," Hongyadong seamlessly blends sightseeing and recreational activities, drawing parallels to the enchanting world depicted in Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away," particularly when illuminated by the evening lights. With 11 floors to explore, Hongyadong comes alive each evening as lights adorn its facades from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.
The pinnacle of Hongyadong offers a panoramic urban veranda and square where up to 1,000 visitors can simultaneously revel in sweeping vistas of the vibrant Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street and the picturesque river scenery. Sculptures adorning the square pay homage to Chongqing's rich heritage, depicting scenes from daily life in the city's past. Notably, the towering "Jiyi Shancheng" sculpture, meaning "the reminiscence of the mountain city," stands at 13 meters in height and 8 meters in width, crafted from brass to encapsulate the riverside nostalgia of old Chongqing.
Echoing its past as a verdant oasis, Hongyadong was once adorned with lush greenery, complemented by a tranquil creek that meandered through the area, forming a gentle waterfall. This serene setting, known as Hongya Dicui, or "water under the greenery at Hongyadong," inspired renowned poets like Su Shi and Huang Tingjian to pen verses celebrating its natural beauty and tranquility.
