Yangtze River Cableway

Soaring above the Yangtze River, the Chongqing Yangtze River Cableway stands as one of the world’s few urban cable cars traversing a major river. A symbol of the city’s ingenuity, it has inspired filmmakers, captivated travelers, and served as a vital transit link for decades—now transformed into an unforgettable aerial adventure over Chongqing’s legendary skyline.

Engineering Marvel & Scenic Journey

Designed and built entirely in China, this 1,166-meter-long cableway connects Yuzhong District’s Jiefangbei (Xinhua Road) to Nan’an District’s Danzishi (Shangxin Street). Gliding at 6 meters per second, the 4-minute ride offers breathtaking views of the "3D vertical city," where skyscrapers cling to hillsides and rivers carve through urban canyons.

From Public Transit to Cultural Icon

In the 1980s, Chongqing pioneered two aerial river crossings to tackle its mountainous terrain:

·Jialing River Cableway (1984–2014): A pioneering line with fares as low as ¥0.10, retired after 30 years of service.

·Yangtze River Cableway (1984–present): The sole survivor, once a daily commute for thousands, now a must-do tourist experience.

Though buses and metros dominate today, the cableway remains a cherished relic of Chongqing’s innovative spirit—a moving vantage point to witness the Yangtze’s grandeur and the city’s dramatic contrasts.

Why Ride It?

·Panoramic thrills: Float between towering bridges and neon-lit high-rises at dusk.

·Cinematic fame: Featured in films like Crazy Stone and Chongqing Hot Pot.

·Local nostalgia: A bittersweet reminder of the city’s evolving identity.

Travel Tip: Visit at sunset when the city glows golden, and the river mirrors the lights of Hongyadong.
