Stone Treasure Fortress

Situated in Zhongxian County along the northern bank of the Yangtze River, Stone Treasure Fortress, also known as Shibaozhai, stands as a national key cultural relics preservation site and a designated national scenic area. Originally constructed during the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty, Shibaozhai showcases a distinctive architectural style comprising the fortress gate, fortress body, and pavilion. This 12-story, 56-meter-high structure was ingeniously crafted without the use of iron nails, employing only mortise and tenon joints. As China's largest surviving column-and-tie-structured building with the most stories, Shibaozhai holds a prominent place among the Eight Architectural Wonders worldwide.

Nestled within the reservoir of the Three Gorges Project, Shibaozhai is surrounded by a protective embankment encircling Yuyin Mountain, completed in 2005 alongside a cement retaining wall to safeguard this historical gem.

Today, Shibaozhai stands as a coveted destination for travelers exploring the Three Gorges region. Viewed from a distance, it resembles a grand mountain-and-water landscape painting, delicately set against the backdrop of the Yangtze River. The mist veiling the waters not only enhances the allure of Shibaozhai but also adds a touch of enchantment to its already captivating presence.

Architectural Highlights

Nestled against a cliff, Shibaozhai’s complex features:

·A winding mountain path and ornate gateway

·The iconic pagoda, with its spiral wooden staircase leading to the summit

·Kuixing Pavilion (Star of Literature Pavilion)

·Tianzi Temple (Emperor’s Temple), built in the Ming Dynasty, housing statues of the Jade Emperor and Queen Mother of the West

The pagoda’s ingenious design allows visitors to ascend floor by floor, immersing themselves in its timeless craftsmanship.

Natural Scenery

Surrounded by the Yangtze River, Shibaozhai resembles a floating "mountain of immortals"—often called the "Bonsai on the Yangtze." After the Three Gorges Reservoir was filled, the fortress became an island, evoking the illusion of a grand ship anchored mid-river. From the top, panoramic views unfold: misty dawns and golden sunsets paint the gorge in ethereal hues, enhancing its mystical grandeur.
